Marvin Fong, Chairman and Treasurer of Market City Limited
Marvin A. Fong serves as Chairman and Treasurer of Market City Limited in Honolulu, Hawaii, a family-owned business started by his father, U.S. Senator Hiram Fong, and two other families in 1948. Since joining the corporation as Asset and Property Manager in 1984, Fong has utilized his expansive experience in law, real estate and banking to guide the 70-year-old company. In his present position, his responsibilities include construction management, care and maintenance of the facilities and investments. The first property, Market City Shopping Center, the 87,000 square feet shopping center is 100% leased and serves the Kaimuki-Moiliili-Kapahulu areas. The anchors are Foodland Super Market, Walgreens and Ben Franklin Stores.
Fong is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. Active in the community, he has served as Chairman of the Honolulu Advisory Board of the Salvation Army; Chairman of the Arcadia Advisory Board; chaired the Board of Deacons for two years at Central Union Church; served as VP of the American Box Car Racing International.
Fong received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Lynchburg College and Juris Doctorate degree at California Western School of Law.
Sandra Au Fong, President and Secretary of Market City Limited
2018 marks Sandra Au Fong’s 33rd year with Market City Shopping Center. As head of Leasing and Marketing, Fong works with her husband Marvin and son Timothy in asset management, day-to-day property management, marketing and leasing. She maintains tenant relations and helps plan advertising and promotions. She served as the exclusive leasing agent for the Kress Building in Hilo and lists and sells most of the real estate for the corporation.
After joining Market City Shopping Center as President, Fong’s first major responsibility was overseeing a $100,000 renovation of the retail space, expanding and updating the facilities. Following the renovation, Market City Shopping Center significantly increased its profitability. Market City is currently home to 22 tenants and serves approximately 160,000 or more consumers in the Kaimuki area.
As part of her marketing efforts, Fong has developed annual community events, including a Chinese New Year celebration, craft fairs, holiday events, and fundraisers. Market City Shopping Center is active in the Kaimuki community, supporting and contributing to local schools. For years, it has awarded scholarships annually to two outstanding students at Kaimuki High School or other nearby schools. Since Fong and her husband took over the shopping center’s operation in 1984, the Market City Foundation, now the Marvin and Sandra Fong Family Foundation and Market City Limited have given more than a half a million dollars to the community both in scholarship money and in support of nonprofit organizations.
Fong currently serves on the board of the Hawaii Council of Economic Education and is a member of the Philanthropic Education Organization Sisters, Hawaii. She has served on numerous local boards and committees, including the Program Committee of the International Council of Shopping Centers’ Hawaii Chapter, the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center, Child & Family Service, Parents and Children Together, Board of Deaconess and Board of Trustees of Central Union Church, Associated Chinese University Women, Kawaiahao Church Child Care Center, and the Family Business Center of Hawaii.
Fong received her bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Fashion Merchandising from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She attended American University in Washington, D.C., for postgraduate studies in educational counseling. In 2000 she earned an Executive MBA from the Shidler College of Business.
Timothy Fong, Vice President of Market City Limited
Timothy Fong has served as vice president of Market City Limited since 2010. In this capacity, he manages the company’s finances and oversees all property management, maintenance, capital improvements, tenant buildouts, landscaping, and security matters, as well as tenant relations. In addition, he seeks new leasing opportunities for available restaurant, retail, and office spaces; he participates in lease negotiations and drafts lease contracts. He has taken an active role in the growth and development of Market City Limited and helped to negotiate some major leases for Market City Shopping Center, such as Foodland Super Market, HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts, Walgreens, and T- Mobile, along with many other leases and lease renewals. Fong, also actively helps to seek new investments for the company, and actively participates in sales and acquisitions and exchanges of all future real estate. He also works with the Director of Marketing to help develop marketing strategy, plan advertisements, and marketing events, including Chinese New Year celebrations, other holiday events, craft fairs, and fundraisers.
Before returning to Hawaii, Fong spent several years gaining experience in a range of investment enterprises. This period culminated with his work as an investment associate in the Century City office of The Robin Group, an investment real estate services network. There he specialized in the sale to investors of multi-family dwellings in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles, creating personalized investment strategies tailored to the investment preferences of each client.
Fong served on the boards of the Hawaii Pops Symphony and the Family Business Center of Hawaii.
Fong received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration – with an emphasis in Real Estate Finance – from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, graduating cum laude in 2006. While at USC, he also graduated with a minor in communications and the entertainment industry from the Annenberg School of Communications.
