Audience:
The Family Business Center of Hawaii’s Growing Leaders Program is designed to help high-performing, mid-level managers prepare for the next level of leadership. Participants may or may not be family members however they must be employed within a family business.
Course Description:
The roles of a manager—and the necessary skills needed to perform as one—are constantly evolving. More than ever, individuals are placed into management positions without management training or informed experience. According to a large-scale survey, more than 58 percent of managers reported they had not received any training and 25 percent admitted they were not ready to lead others when they were given the role. Added to that challenge, the demands of the job have increased: the average manager has seven direct reports (five was once the norm), and has less management time to spend with them than before. Considering that a Gallup poll found organizations chose the wrong candidate for management positions 82 percent of the time, we conclude that the more you can learn about people and how to manage them, the better prepared you will be to be that right candidate. Organizational Behavior (OB) will help you get there. (source: Essentials of Organizational Behavior, 14th Edition)
OB is the study of what people do in an organization and the way their behavior affects the organization’s performance. Because OB is concerned specifically with employment-related situations, it examines behavior in the context of job satisfaction, absenteeism, employment turnover, productivity, human performance, and management. While OB is the study of these important human behaviors and the impact on business, Human Resources Management takes the results of these studies and identifies ways to apply these concepts into daily business (source: Essentials of Organizational Behavior, 14th Edition)

Three of the coaching sessions will be during the first half of the program and 3 coaching sessions will be in the last half of the program. The participant will schedule a call, no more than 1-hour, to discuss a very specific question. The participant will email their coach the question at least 2-days prior to the meeting.
